Jussi Särkkä
Jussi Särkkä started his musical studies in Joensuu and studied at the Sibelius Academy from the year 1982 lead by Emanuel Elola and privately by Laszlo Hara, among others. He finished his A-degree in 1986, had his début concert in 1989 and graduated as a master of music already in 2003!
Särkkä’s first contract was with the Joensuu City Orchestra as the principal bassoonist from 1981 to 1982. Subsequently, he has worked in the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and The Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera. At the present, he is the 2nd solo bassoonist of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He is also a founder member and principal bassoonist of the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, the principal bassoonist of the Finnish Chamber Orchestra and also plays period instruments in, for example, the Sixth Floor Orchestra.
Särkkä has performed as the soloist for many Finnish orchestras and is known as an active chamber musician, for example, in the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and a member of the Kerberos Ensemble. From the year 1981 he has taught in several music schools and from 1994 has worked as a lecturer in the Sibelius Academy. Särkkä has been named the artistic director of the Crusell Week from the year 2006 onwards.
Jussi Särkkä’s family includes his wife, three energetic daughters and the two perky Irish soft-coated wheaten terriers Siiri and Dina. Särkkä’s heart is also warmed by endurance sports in its various forms: running, roller skating, Nordic walking and especially cross-country skiing, which he has been seen to engage in often even during the summer…
