International Crusell Bassoon Competition

The Crusell Society has been sponsoring an international competition for woodwind players biennially since 2005. The first competition was organised for oboists and after that the flutists and clarinetists have got their own competitions. In summer 2011 it is time to have a competition for bassoon players, which is open for bassoonists of all nationalities born in or after 1981. The Competition Committee will select competitors based on the registration information and a CD-recording of Henri Dutilleux’s Sarabande et Cortège. The committee consists of Mr. Jussi Särkkä, chairman, Artistic Director, Co-Principal, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra RSO, Mr. Harri Ahmas, Principal, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Jaakko Luoma, Principal, Tapiola Sinfonietta and Mr. Otto Virtanen, Principal, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra RSO. A maximum of 40 participants will be accepted for the Competition, max ten to the Semi-final Round and max four to the Final Round The members of the jury are Mr. Jussi Särkkä, chairman, Finland, Mr. Gilbert Audin, First Solo Bassoon, Opéra national de Paris, Mr. Dag Jensen, Professor, Hanover Academy of Music and Theatre, Norway, Mr. Jaakko Luoma, Principal, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Finland, Mr. Eberhard Marschall, Principal, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Germany and Mr. Frank Morelli, Professor, Juilliard School, USA. The prizes are EUR 6000, 3000 and 2000. Additional prizes may be awarded. The winner will be invited to perform during Crusell Week 2012. The composer-bassoonist Harri Ahmas has composed a new piece for bassoon and piano, commissioned by the Crusell Society, to be played obligatorily in the Semi-final Round. The obligatory piece in the Final Round is Concertino B flat major by the Finnish composer Bernhard Henrik Crusell, born in Uusikaupunki. The concertino will be played with the Virtuosi di Kuhmo chamber orchestra, conducted by the French conductor Mr. Benoît Fromanger.
